From the battlefield to the beauty industry, Former US Marine, James Jo, founded Symphony Beauty in 2015 as a way to connect the bridge between inner and outer beauty.

Natural, pure and cruelty-free ingredients is at the core of Symphony Beauty. James wanted to make sure his wife had access to safe, replenishing skincare products throughout her pregnancy. Products in tune with her lifestyle, values and “music to the skin.”

James’ story started on September 11th, 2001.

When the first plane hit the Twin Towers in New York City, James witnessed the tragedy through his apartment window in downtown NYC while in college at Parsons School of Design. As a New York City native, that moment defined the beginning of his new journey. James decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq soon after. In the military, James learned about honor, courage, and commitment – the three values embedded deep in him that later defined who he is as a leader.

After serving in Iraq, James came back home and landed a job in the beauty industry. During his decade-long tenure, he traveled to 24 countries, gaining extensive experience in product knowledge, marketing, operations, and sales. He had a stable and rising career in the industry, but his true passion and purpose became a loud calling that he wanted to pursue. He then decided to leave the company and fulfill his life-long dream of creating a sustainable brand with his family top of mind.

James ultimately created Symphony Beauty for his wife, Alicia, who had extremely sensitive skin and difficulty finding skin care that was suitable for her skin type.

Being born and raised in South Korea, Alicia was used to using high-quality skin care. When she first came to the U.S. after marrying James, and having to switch to other skincare brands, Alicia began experiencing skin problems.

Using his background, both personal and professional, as a Korean American, James sourced natural, safe, effective, and on-trend ingredients from South Korea which are now manufactured locally and sold in the U.S.

James and Symphony Beauty are the reflection of each other. The company is the mirror that reflects decades of his honor, courage, and commitment towards his family and community – the honor to stay true and proud to his core values, the courage to do the right things even when times are tough, and the commitment that allows him to follow through on all his promises.
